G7 Leaders Warn Iran Over Uranium Enrichment and Destabilizing Activities in the Middle East

Leaders of the seven industrialized and advanced countries have issued a warning to the Islamic Republic in a statement that has been leaked, urging it to halt its uranium enrichment activities. The Associated Press reported on Friday, June 15, that the G7 leaders stated, "There is no credible civilian justification" for the level of uranium enrichment in Iran. This statement, which is set to be released at the end of the G7 leaders' summit in Italy, emphasizes that these countries are determined that Iran "must never acquire or develop nuclear weapons." This warning comes as Reuters reported on June 14, citing an International Atomic Energy Agency report, that Iran has rapidly installed additional centrifuges in response to a resolution from the Board of Governors at the Fordow facility. The U.S. has stated it will respond appropriately to the expansion of Iran's uranium enrichment capacity. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department remarked that this indicates that "Iran intends to continue expanding its nuclear program in ways that have no credible peaceful purpose." The IAEA Board of Governors approved a resolution proposed by the UK, France, and Germany last Wednesday, which called on Iran to respond to the agency's inspectors' questions regarding suspicious aspects of its nuclear program and reconsider its decision to obstruct the activities of experienced inspectors. The G7 leaders also stated in another part of their statement that they are prepared to act "swiftly and in coordination" if Iran transfers ballistic missiles and related technology to Russia, which would include "new and significant measures." The draft of this statement also indicates that if Iran does not cease its "destructive activities and destabilizing actions in the Middle East," they are ready to impose new sanctions against Tehran. The Islamic Republic, in addition to being a main supporter of the extremist group Hamas, whose leaders have repeatedly praised the group's incursion into Israeli territory on October 7 last year, has in recent months prepared attacks against Israel and Western forces using its other proxy groups. Additionally, in April of this year, following an attack attributed to Israel on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus that resulted in the deaths of several senior IRGC commanders, Iran launched an unprecedented barrage of hundreds of missiles and drones towards Israel, most of which were intercepted by Israeli air defenses and their allies. Recently, Hezbollah Lebanon, one of the most significant proxy groups of the Islamic Republic, has intensified its missile and rocket fire towards Israeli territory, raising fears of a widespread war between Israel and this group. The leaders of the seven industrialized countries also addressed the Iranian officials, urging them to end the "unjust and arbitrary detention," including the imprisonment of foreign and dual nationals. They also condemned the "unacceptable harassment" of Iranian citizens by the Iranian government. This statement will be released as Louis Arnaud, a French citizen imprisoned in Iran who was sentenced to five years on security charges last year, returned to Paris after being released from prison on Thursday. This French citizen, who was arrested for participating in a protest over the death of Mahsa Amini, was freed after spending nearly two years in Evin prison, thanks to mediation from Oman. Several other foreign citizens have been released through the mediation of other countries, but some remain imprisoned in Iran, and analysts say Iranian officials are using the policy of "hostage-taking" of foreign citizens to gain leverage over the West. Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, stated on June 14 that he had contacted Iran's foreign minister to demand the release of European citizens imprisoned in Iran. Cecile Kohler, Jacques Paris, and a citizen named "Olivier" are among three French citizens currently imprisoned in Iran.
