G7 Leaders Warn Islamic Republic: Stop Enrichment Activities and Cooperate with the Agency

Leaders of the G7 countries issued a warning to the Islamic Republic regarding the advancement of its nuclear enrichment program on Friday, June 15. In their draft statement, they also stated that if the Islamic Republic intends to transfer ballistic missiles to Russia, it will face serious actions from them. The countries called on the Islamic Republic to halt nuclear tensions and reverse the process, ending uranium enrichment activities that have no civilian justification. The UN nuclear watchdog reported on Thursday that the Islamic Republic has rapidly installed additional uranium enrichment centrifuges at the 'Fordow' site and has begun operating others. According to estimates from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Islamic Republic is currently enriching uranium to 60% purity, close to the 90% required for military use, and if further enriched, it would have enough material to build three nuclear weapons. In another part of the G7 statement, it is mentioned that the Islamic Republic must engage in serious dialogue and provide convincing guarantees that its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. These countries urged the Islamic Republic to fully cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency and comply with the monitoring and verification mechanisms of this body, including a recent resolution from the Board of Governors. The Islamic Republic claims that Iran's nuclear program is civilian and has peaceful objectives. The G7 leaders also warned the Islamic Republic about signing a contract to send ballistic missiles to Russia, which would assist that country in its war against Ukraine. They stated that if these missiles are sent to Russia, they are prepared to take serious actions against the Islamic Republic. These countries requested that the Islamic Republic stop aiding Moscow in the Ukraine war and not send ballistic missiles and related technologies to Russia, as this would constitute a fundamental material escalation and a direct threat to European security.
