Gaza Officials: Two Journalists Killed in Israeli Airstrike

According to Gaza health officials and the Gaza Journalists Association, two Palestinian journalists were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a vehicle near Rafah in southern Gaza on Sunday while they were reporting. Gaza is controlled by Hamas. Reuters reports that the two journalists were freelance reporters Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuriya. Al-Dahdouh had reported for Al Jazeera and was the son of Wael al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera's senior correspondent in Gaza. A third freelance journalist named Hazem Rajab was injured. Al Jazeera condemned the killing of the two journalists, calling it a deliberate attack. The network stated, 'We call on the International Criminal Court, governments, human rights organizations, and the United Nations to hold Israel accountable for its heinous crimes and demand an end to the targeting and killing of journalists.' The Israeli army did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the attack or the network's claim of deliberately targeting the two journalists. The Israeli army had previously stated in a statement about three weeks ago, in response to the killing of another Al Jazeera journalist in Gaza, that it never deliberately targets journalists and will not do so. Following Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel on October 6, Israel has launched a widespread offensive to destroy Hamas in Gaza.
