German Chancellor's Visit to Washington; Middle East Conflicts and Aid to Ukraine at the Center of Discussions

Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, said on Friday, February 9, that he would support U.S. President Joe Biden's efforts to secure more funding for Ukraine during a White House meeting expected to address Middle Eastern conflicts as well. Before meeting with Mr. Biden at the White House to discuss two major global political crises, Scholz met with several American business leaders to discuss investment opportunities in Germany. The German Chancellor told reporters that the U.S. Senate's move to advance a $95.34 billion bill, which includes aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, gave him hope. He emphasized that Germany has been a strong partner in supporting Ukraine against Russia's full-scale invasion. Scholz pointed out that Putin is counting on a reduction in support for Ukraine, stating, 'Now, this strong support must also be seen in the rest of Europe and the United States.' He added that his meeting with U.S. senators from both parties on the evening of February 9 reassured him that foreign policy and security experts in the U.S. Congress understand the necessity of ongoing support for Ukraine. Scholz mentioned that Putin, in a conversation with conservative American host Tucker Carlson, recounted 'a completely meaningless narrative about the origins of the war,' which he viewed as a sign of the Russian President's intent to annex parts of Ukraine. John Kirby, the White House spokesperson, stated on February 9 that the German Chancellor and the U.S. President would emphasize their strong support for Ukraine and finding ways to continue aid to the country. The White House has been warning for months that a lack of support from lawmakers for Kyiv would undermine Ukraine's ability to fight Russia. The European Union approved a €50 billion package last week to assist Ukraine. Ukraine, which aspires to join the NATO alliance, relies on Western countries for military and financial strength. Kirby noted that Biden and Scholz would also discuss the situation in Gaza and ensure that Israel has what it needs for self-defense while humanitarian aid reaches the people. He mentioned that they would likely discuss the threats posed by Houthi rebels to international shipping in the Red Sea. Germany is delivering 105 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine.
