German Defense Minister Emphasizes Full Support for Israel

On Thursday, the German Defense Minister committed that his country would support Israel in its battle against Hamas. According to Reuters, Boris Pistorius, during his visit to Tel Aviv and standing next to Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, told him, "We will do everything we can to support you." He further emphasized, "We will do this with material support." Pistorius reiterated the message of solidarity that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz conveyed during his visit to Israel last week, stating, "Germany stands with Israel and the people of Israel." He also expressed concern over the potential escalation of conflicts and called for the release of hostages taken by Hamas. Pistorius visited Israel after meeting with German soldiers stationed in a UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has also initiated a new round of crisis negotiations in Jordan, Israel, and Lebanon, given the rising tensions between Israel and Hamas. Before her trip to Jordan, she assured Israel of her government's "unwavering solidarity" with the country. She stated, "The war is against Hamas, not Palestinian civilians, as they are suffering greatly." The purpose of this trip is to negotiate the release of hostages taken by Hamas militants following the attack on October 6 in southern Israel. Additionally, the German Foreign Ministry has appointed a special envoy for humanitarian aid issues in the Middle East to coordinate support for civilians in Gaza, which is under siege by Israel. Gallant accepted responsibility for the failure to prevent the Hamas attack, stating, "We will be precise and deadly." The killing of two senior Hamas officials in an Israeli attack on Gaza, a meeting between the Egyptian president and the CENTCOM commander, and increased global efforts to "restore stability" to the region were also noted. Dozens were arrested in an Israeli raid in the West Bank, with 63 individuals reportedly linked to Hamas militants.
