German Foreign Ministry: We are following the status of our detained citizen in Iran

Following reports of the detention of a German citizen in Iran, the German Foreign Ministry responded to a question from the Persian section of Voice of America, stating that it is monitoring the situation of this national. The ministry emphasized that it takes the detention of its citizens 'very seriously' and added, 'Our embassy in Tehran is following this issue, and tomorrow, in a pre-scheduled meeting, it will raise this matter with Iranian officials.' The German diplomatic service further reminded Voice of America that its embassy in Tehran 'is supporting several detained German citizens in Iran.' The German Foreign Ministry concluded by stating, 'We have evidence suggesting that today's report may relate to one of these cases that has been under consular support for a long time.' There is still no precise information available regarding the date, location, and reason for the detention of this German citizen. Iran's insistence on continuing its hostage-taking policy comes at a time when the international community has repeatedly criticized this practice of the Islamic Republic and called for an end to hostage-taking for political gains.
