German Journalist Released from Turkish Prison

A German journalist who had been detained in Turkey for a year was released from prison on Friday but must await trial. Simultaneously, six Turkish journalists and newspaper employees were sentenced to life imprisonment by the court. According to the Associated Press, Deniz Yucel, a reporter for the German newspaper Die Welt, was arrested during a widespread crackdown on civil society and media by the Turkish government following the failed coup in the summer of 2016. Mr. Yucel, 44, who holds both German and Turkish citizenship, was detained on February 14, 2017, on charges of propaganda against the government and terrorism-related offenses, which he has denied. His case and that of five other German citizens still imprisoned in Turkey have strained relations between the two countries. German Chancellor Angela Merkel welcomed the release of this journalist on Friday and expressed happiness for Mr. Yucel and his family, who have endured a "difficult year of separation." A photo shared by the journalist's lawyer on Twitter shows the moment Mr. Yucel reunited with his wife outside the prison. Ms. Merkel stated that the journalist's release "shows that dialogue is not in vain" and expressed hope that Mr. Yucel would not return to prison. However, she also pointed to the detention of others in Turkish prisons, including several German citizens, stating, "We know that other individuals who may not be as well-known remain in Turkish prisons, and we hope their cases are examined quickly and according to the law." Ms. Merkel refrained from commenting on the possibility of an agreement with the Turkish government during her meeting with the Turkish Prime Minister on Thursday in Berlin. German officials have denied claims that the release of Deniz Yucel may be the result of a weapons deal between the two countries. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry told reporters in Berlin, "There is no talk of dirty deals or secret agreements." The Associated Press adds that although German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel has expressed hope that Mr. Yucel will soon be able to leave Turkey, the conditions of his release from prison are still not fully clear. The Turkish state news agency reported that the court issued a ruling for Mr. Yucel's release until the trial is held. The prosecutor has requested an 18-year prison sentence for this journalist on charges of "participating in terrorist propaganda and promoting hatred and hostility in public opinion." The director of the institution that publishes Die Welt expressed satisfaction with Deniz Yucel's release after a year in prison, stating that this case highlights the importance of media freedom, which must always be defended. At the same time, the Turkish state news agency announced on Friday that a court in Istanbul sentenced six journalists and press employees, including Nazli Iljic, Ahmet Altan, and Mehmet Altan, to life imprisonment for their involvement in the failed coup of 2016. These journalists have been accused of having connections with the followers of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish cleric residing in the U.S., whom the Turkish government blames for orchestrating the coup. Mr. Gülen has denied these accusations. These individuals were convicted of actions against the Turkish constitution and membership in a terrorist network.
