German Parliament Investigation into Nuclear Energy Phase-Out Decisions

A special committee of the German Parliament (Bundestag) began its investigation on Friday, January 18, into the actions of the country's Ministers of Economy and Environment regarding the phase-out of nuclear energy. This committee particularly focuses on whether Robert Habeck, the Minister of Economy, and Steffi Lemke, the Minister of Environment, thoroughly and impartially reviewed the continuation of nuclear power plants in 2022. Germany officially ended its use of nuclear energy about two years ago, shutting down its last three nuclear power plants. This decision was made under circumstances where the German government, due to the energy crisis stemming from Russia's war against Ukraine, decided to extend the operation of these plants for a few more months. According to the initial plan, the complete exit from nuclear energy was supposed to be completed by December 31, 2022. The extension of the operational period of the plants and the decision for a final exit from nuclear energy have caused significant disagreements among government members and the opposition. The investigative committee, formed following a request from the Union faction (the opposition parties) and the official approval of Parliament, is responsible for examining the transparency and correctness of the government's decisions in this regard. This committee, alongside another investigative committee looking into the withdrawal of German military forces from Afghanistan, is considered the second major investigative case in this parliamentary term.
