German Prosecutors Seek Prison Sentences for Hezbollah Membership Suspects

On Wednesday, June 6, German prosecutors requested prison sentences for two defendants in the first trial of two suspects accused of membership in the Lebanese group Hezbollah in Germany. The press office of the Higher Regional Court of "Hanseatic" announced that a 50-year-old Lebanese man could face a sentence of five and a half years in prison for membership in a foreign terrorist organization. For the second defendant, a 56-year-old German-Lebanese citizen, the prosecution requested three years in prison. These two suspects were arrested on May 10 of last year in the state of "Lower Saxony." It is reported that the 56-year-old man was a member of an elite military unit in Hezbollah. According to reports, he became a member of this group in 2009 and later served as the head of the Al-Mustafa Society in Germany, an organization that was banned in Germany in 2022. On April 30, 2020, the German police classified Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, banning the activities of this Iranian-backed extremist group in the country. In recent years, Germany has monitored and banned the activities of Islamist groups in the country. This comes as surveillance and control of Islamist groups have intensified in Germany to identify support for Hamas following the extremist group's attack on Israeli territory on October 7.
