Germany and Poland Report Arrests of Several Russian Espionage and Sabotage Operatives

Two German-Russian citizens were arrested on suspicion of planning sabotage operations at U.S. military bases in Germany, an action that security officials described as a serious attempt to undermine military support for Ukraine. At the same time, Poland also arrested a suspect for espionage on behalf of Russia in a plot to assassinate Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to Reuters, German counterintelligence officials have inspected the residences and workplaces of the two suspects, who are accused of collaborating with a foreign secret organization. German prosecutors stated on Thursday that one of the suspects confessed to potential conspiracies with an individual linked to the Russian intelligence agency. Security officials noted that after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Germany became one of the largest suppliers of military aid to Kyiv and thus a primary target for Russian espionage operations. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, stated at a press conference following an informal EU summit in Brussels, "We can never accept that such espionage activities take place in Germany." Meanwhile, on the same day, Polish officials announced that a Polish man was arrested on charges of espionage for the Russian military intelligence agency in connection with a plan reportedly aimed at assassinating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. According to the Polish prosecutor's office, the arrested man, identified as "Pawel K," is accused of preparing to transfer airport security information to Russian intelligence agents. He was reportedly in contact with Russians directly involved in the war in Ukraine and was expected to provide detailed information about an airport in southeastern Poland near the Ukrainian border, which is one of the routes for international aid to Ukraine. This airport, controlled by U.S. forces, provides airport services to Ukraine and to leaders and politicians traveling in and out of Ukraine. The Polish prosecutor's office stated that this operation was the result of close intelligence cooperation with Ukrainian security agencies. According to Polish security officials, investigations are ongoing and the case is being finalized. Last year, Poland reported the arrest of several members of a Russian espionage network.
