Germany Arrests Pro-Assad Militant on Charges of Crimes Against Humanity

The German prosecutor's office announced on Thursday that a Syrian national accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes through torture and slavery between 2012 and 2015 has been arrested. The accused, named 'Ahmad H', is a leader of the 'Shabiha' militia and was detained on Wednesday. The German prosecutor's office states that this group assisted in the deadly suppression of protesters against Bashar al-Assad. The 'Shabiha' militants, supported by the Assad government, have engaged in arbitrary detention, extortion, looting, forced labor, and torture of Syrian protesters. German prosecutors have stated that the accused is responsible for several instances of brutal beatings of civilians as well as two incidents in 2012 and 2015 where prisoners were forced to work at gunpoint without access to food and water. Germany has played a pioneering role in prosecuting Syrian war criminals based on universal jurisdiction laws that allow its courts to address crimes against humanity anywhere in the world. Currently, a Syrian doctor suspected of committing crimes against humanity, including torturing prisoners in military hospitals in Syria, is being tried in Frankfurt.
