Germany: Cyber Attacks from Iran, Russia, and China Have Increased

The head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency states that the level of cyber threats from Iran, Russia, and China has increased. Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), mentioned in an interview with the news network 'Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland' published on Thursday, June 21, that during the current year, 'the quantity and quality of cyber attacks from foreign intelligence services have increased.' This German intelligence official specifically named the intelligence services of Russia, China, and Iran, stating that Germany is one of the potential targets of these cyber attacks. Mr. Maassen did not provide details about the cyber attacks against Germany, but in the last month of the previous year, there were attacks on the country's government computers that were described as 'very advanced' and were attributed to Russia by the media. Russia denied these accusations. The United States and European countries have repeatedly warned in recent years about the occurrence of cyber attacks from Russia and China, and Iran has also been recognized as responsible for several attacks. In April of this year, 10 Iranian individuals and entities were sanctioned by the United States for hacking hundreds of American and international universities. Previously, in cases of breaches of several American banks and hacking of the computers of a small dam near New York, attempts to attack the accounts of officials in Barack Obama's government were attributed to hackers linked to the Islamic Republic. Additionally, in the last month of the previous year, Iran was accused of being involved in cyber attacks against the accounts of some British parliament members, but Iranian officials denied this accusation. Hackers associated with the Iranian government have also been accused of attacking the computers of Iranians abroad. For instance, the Campaign for Human Rights in Iran reported about two months ago that several Iranians abroad, including dual nationals and civil and political activists, were targeted by hackers from Iran. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, has called for an 'offensive' approach in the information war. The head of Germany's domestic intelligence agency, in his recent interview, emphasized the need for countries to enhance their security measures, stating that 'our democracy is not limited to the real world, and defense in cyberspace is also necessary.'
