Germany to Halve Military Aid to Ukraine

Despite concerns that support for Kyiv may decrease with the potential return of Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, to the White House, Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year. According to the draft budget for 2025 reviewed by Reuters, Germany's aid to Ukraine will drop from 8 billion euros in 2024 to 4 billion euros (4.35 billion dollars) in 2025. Germany hopes that Ukraine will be able to meet a large part of its military needs with a 50 billion dollar loan from the income generated from frozen Russian assets, which has been approved by the G7. Christian Lindner, Germany's finance minister, announced on Wednesday, July 17, at a press conference: 'In the foreseeable future, Ukraine will have a reliable budget thanks to European payments and G7 loans.' Washington is currently pressuring to expedite the disbursement of these loans to secure a substantial budget for Ukraine. Some Western officials say that since the rapid disbursement of these loans reduces the likelihood of Ukraine facing a budget shortfall with Trump's return to the White House, EU leaders have somewhat agreed to this issue. The election of Senator J.D. Vance as Trump's vice president this week was seen as a significant warning to Europe to rely less on the United States for its protection, as Vance has always opposed military aid to Ukraine. After Trump stated that he would not protect countries that failed to meet NATO military spending goals and would even encourage Russia to attack them, he faced severe criticism from Western officials.
