Germany to Remove Equipment from Two Chinese Companies from Its 5G Networks

The German government announced that it will remove key equipment from Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE from its 5G networks by 2026. This decision aims to reduce reliance on Chinese technology and enhance the security of the communication infrastructure of this U.S. ally in Europe. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated on Thursday that the country will eliminate all equipment made by Huawei and ZTE from its 5G networks by the end of 2026. Additionally, 'critical management systems' from these manufacturers in the 5G access and transmission networks must also be replaced by the end of 2029. This decision was made following recent discussions with German 5G network operators – Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, and Telefonica – and agreements are set to be signed with all three companies. The German Interior Minister emphasized the importance of resilience and security in Germany's communication infrastructure, citing potential risks of sabotage and espionage. She stated that the government is committed to protecting the communications of citizens and businesses. This action gives German operators ample time to replace the necessary equipment. Berlin's decision comes amid challenges in Germany's relations with China, the world's second-largest economy, due to security concerns and political disputes in recent years. However, Germany continues to seek to maintain strong economic ties with China. The United States has also actively urged its European allies in recent years to limit the use of Huawei's equipment in their 5G networks due to concerns about potential cyber espionage or disruption of critical communication systems by Beijing.
