Germany's Efforts to List the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a Terrorist Organization

Reports indicate that the German federal government is making efforts to have the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) listed as a terrorist organization. According to information published by Die Zeit, one of Germany's most widely circulated newspapers, on Thursday, July 5, the federal government has initiated a formal process with the European Union to impose terrorist sanctions against the IRGC. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Germany's largest opposition party, has also called for a fundamental review of Germany's policy towards the Islamic Republic of Iran. This party, referring to the long-standing history of the Islamic Republic in financing global terrorism, destabilizing the Middle East, and threatening Israel's existence through support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, has demanded a change in Berlin's approach. The main proposals of this party include pressuring the European Union to recognize the IRGC as a terrorist group, forming an anti-Islamic Republic coalition with moderate Arab countries, and halting the Iranian government's nuclear program. The CDU has requested that Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, in cooperation with other partners, create a coherent and practical strategy to prevent the expansion of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. Other proposals from the CDU include shutting down the Islamic center in Hamburg. Previously, the European Union had stated that a court ruling is needed to declare the IRGC as a terrorist organization. According to speculation, the German federal government is relying on a ruling from the Düsseldorf High Court against an Iranian named Babak Jalali, accused of attempting a terrorist attack on a synagogue. The court ruling stated that an Iranian state entity was behind this attack. German television network One also reported that the IRGC orchestrated this attack through a person named Ramin Yekta Parast, the leader of a criminal gang. Yekta Parast was suspiciously murdered in Iran recently. Requests from dozens of political activists and families seeking justice have been made to the Dutch government to declare the IRGC as a terrorist organization. The United States has called the IRGC a 'threat to the entire world'; Miller stated: 'We will help other countries also classify the IRGC as a terrorist group.' Canada has listed the IRGC among terrorist organizations.
