Ghazaleh Sharmeh: My Father Suffers from Advanced Parkinson's; Execution Could Happen at Any Moment

Ghazaleh Sharmeh, daughter of Jamshid Sharmeh, told AFP that her father suffers from Parkinson's disease and may lose his life due to his deteriorating condition. In the interview published on Sunday, November 5, she said: "My father is in the advanced stage of Parkinson's, and the delay in his medication makes it almost impossible for him to speak, walk, or even breathe." She further stated: "His teeth have broken due to torture or malnutrition, and he cannot properly pronounce words or chew or eat food." According to Ghazaleh Sharmeh, Mr. Jamshid Sharmeh has been in complete solitary confinement for over 1,185 days, which alone can drive a person to madness and drain every last ounce of energy from a human body. Jamshid Sharmeh, according to his daughter, experiences severe chest pain as soon as he attempts to walk, and his legs are constantly swollen. The family of this Iranian-German dual citizen, who also has permanent residency in the United States, has no information about his place of detention. Ghazaleh Sharmeh, who is an intensive care nurse specializing in coronary care, warned that her father is at risk of a heart attack. She stated that her father's life is "seriously endangered in the inhumane conditions where they are trying to break his will." Ghazaleh Sharmeh warned: "After illegal sham trials, [my father] is still sentenced to death and could be taken out of his cell for execution at any moment." According to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, 68-year-old Jamshid Sharmeh was abducted in the summer of 2020 in the UAE and forcibly transferred to Iran. The Islamic Republic has stated that Mr. Sharmeh was arrested in a "complex operation." Mr. Sharmeh was sentenced to death in Iran on charges of "corruption on earth." According to Amnesty International, Jamshid Sharmeh has been subjected to "enforced disappearance, torture, and other ill-treatment." Currently, dozens of dual citizens and foreigners are present in the prisons of the Islamic Republic. Human rights activists and organizations, as well as Western officials, accuse the Islamic Republic of deliberately pursuing a policy of "hostage-taking" to gain political concessions from the West.
