Giant Whale of Peru Takes Title of Heaviest Animal in History from Blue Whale

A new competitor for the heaviest animal ever discovered has been found. While the blue whale has long held this title, scientists have discovered fossils of an ancient whale that is said to be heavier. Researchers say that each vertebra of the 'Giant Whale of Peru' weighs over 100 kilograms, and its ribs are approximately 1.4 meters long. Hans Tiwissen from Northeast Ohio Medical University described finding such a gigantic animal as 'very exciting,' noting that it is very different from anything observed to date. The bones of this giant whale were discovered over a decade ago by Mario Urbina from the Natural History Museum of San Marcos University in Lima. It took years for an international team to extract these remains from an area in Peru that was once underwater and known for its rich marine fossils. Ultimately, 13 vertebrae from the spine, four ribs, and one pelvic bone were recovered from this whale. Alberto Collarte, the author of the article published in the journal 'Nature' from the University of Pisa in Italy, stated that the massive fossils, which are 39 million years old, resemble nothing he has seen before. After excavation, researchers used 3D scanners to study the surface of the bones and drilled into them to observe their interiors. Eli Amson, another author from the Stuttgart Natural History Museum in Germany, said they used the very large but incomplete skeleton of the whale to estimate its size and weight, comparing it to modern marine mammals. Calculations indicated that this ancient giant weighs between 85 to 340 tons. The largest blue whales discovered weigh around 180 tons. The body length of this ancient whale was about 20 meters, while blue whales can be longer, with some exceeding 30 meters. Alberto Collarte stated that the newly discovered whale is likely the 'heaviest' animal ever observed, but 'probably' not the longest animal in history. The reason for the heavier weight of the Giant Whale of Peru is the denser structure of its bones compared to the blue whale. Researchers suggest this indicates that the whale may have spent most of its life in shallow coastal waters. They say that without having a skull, it is difficult to determine what this whale would have eaten to sustain such a massive body.
