Girlfriend of Las Vegas Shooter Responds to FBI Questions

Marilou Danley, the girlfriend of Stephen Paddock, the perpetrator of the shooting that left 58 dead and hundreds injured in Las Vegas, has answered questions from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after returning from the Philippines. Danley, who is originally from the Philippines, stated in a statement released after her meeting with FBI agents that she had no connection to the attack and was visiting family in the Philippines at the time of the incident. Paddock had transferred $100,000 to the Philippines before carrying out the massacre in Vegas. Danley expressed that she was happy to receive the money to buy a house for her family, but later became concerned that Paddock might have done this to end their relationship. The 62-year-old Danley had been outside the U.S. for a total of two weeks: "Nothing that could lead me to suspect he was planning violence against others ever crossed my mind." Danley's sister, who lives in Australia, stated in a television interview that she believes Paddock sent Marilou to the Philippines to avoid interfering with his plans. The shooting location in the hotel, with broken windows from which the shooting occurred, is clearly visible in the image. Investigators and police forces are currently conducting extensive investigations into Paddock's motives and the Vegas massacre; the shooter had no criminal record or history of mental illness. Despite extensive investigations, his motives remain unclear. Andrew McCabe, the Deputy Director of the FBI, stated, "This individual and the attack he carried out left no immediate and clear footprints that are often left in some mass shootings." The room that Paddock rented on the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay hotel overlooked a concert with 22,000 attendees. He opened fire on the crowd from this room. The Associated Press reported, citing an unnamed source, that the Vegas shooter specifically requested a room on the upper floors overlooking the music festival. However, he was unable to move to such a room until Saturday. The room he rented normally costs $590, but he was given a free room because, according to this source, Stephen Paddock was a "good customer" who spent tens of thousands of dollars every time he visited the local casino. Earlier reports indicated that Paddock was a professional gambler, but there is still no evidence that he faced any specific financial problems or debts, or whether such issues drove him to the Vegas massacre. Paddock first met his girlfriend, Ms. Danley, at the Atlantis Casino in Reno, Nevada. Authorities have stated that Paddock transferred 23 firearms into his room in 10 suitcases before the attack. He had also set up cameras inside and outside the room. The Vegas attack left 58 dead (some earlier reports in U.S. media had stated 59 fatalities, but the Clark County Sheriff's Office later confirmed that 58 people had died). More than 500 others were injured during the shooting. This attack is the deadliest of its kind in contemporary American history.
