Global Condemnation of Israeli Settler Violence in the West Bank; EU Considering Sanctions

Israeli settler violence in the West Bank has faced widespread international reactions, including from Israeli leaders. Simultaneously, the Israeli army issued an order to evacuate areas in southern and central Gaza that were previously considered safe zones. Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, August 26, that the EU "condemns the attacks by Israeli settlers aimed at instilling fear and terror among Palestinian civilians." He urged the Israeli government to immediately halt these "unacceptable" actions and added: "The EU is considering this matter to impose sanctions against Israeli officials." Germany also described the attack by Jewish settlers on a village in the West Bank, which resulted in the death of a Palestinian, as "unacceptable" on Friday. The German Foreign Ministry wrote on X: "We condemn the violence of extremist settlers" and called on Israel to protect Palestinians in the West Bank by stopping this violence. France and the UK also condemned the violence in the West Bank on Friday. French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who were visiting the region, held a press conference in Israel. During this meeting, the British Foreign Secretary condemned the settlers' attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank and stated that Benjamin Netanyahu promised him that investigations into the violence would be initiated. A group of Israeli settlers, reported to number over 100, attacked the residents of the village of "Jit" in the West Bank on Thursday, August 25, wearing masks and throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, setting at least four houses and six vehicles on fire. During this attack, at least one Palestinian, aged 23, was killed. Senior Israeli officials, including Isaac Herzog, the President, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister, Yoav Gallant, the Defense Minister, and Herzi Halevi, the Army Chief, condemned this assault. The Defense Minister and Army Chief referred to the perpetrators of this attack as "rioters" who hinder security forces from their "primary mission of neutralizing terrorism." Although the Israeli army stated that it had arrested an Israeli civilian in connection with this violence and had begun investigations, experts say that the settlers involved in the violence have never been prosecuted. Concurrently, the Israeli army issued an order on Friday to evacuate areas in southern and central Gaza that were previously considered safe. According to the Israeli army, Hamas uses these areas as a base for launching mortars and rockets towards Israeli territory. Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by the US and the EU. The army's statement emphasized that in order to "reduce harm to the civilian population and provide an opportunity for them to move away from the combat zone, warning brochures and text messages have been sent to northern Khan Younis and eastern Deir al-Balah." Khan Younis is located in southern Gaza, and Deir al-Balah is in central Gaza, areas where tens of thousands of people from war-torn Gaza have sought refuge. The Israeli army had previously announced that weapons, including shoulder-fired rockets and explosives, had been found in an area of Khan Younis from where rockets were fired towards the residential area of Kisufim.
