Global Drug Market Suppression Operation in the Dark Web; 300 Arrested

U.S. and European officials have suppressed a dark web market, which they claim was part of one of the largest international drug trafficking crackdowns. During this operation, nearly 300 individuals were arrested, and over $53 million was seized. According to the Associated Press, this operation targeted the 'exclusive market' for drugs and is one phase of a major effort to eliminate platforms selling drugs and other illegal goods on the so-called 'dark web,' a part of the internet that exists on an encrypted network with hidden IP addresses and can only be accessed through specialized anonymous tools. Most arrests occurred in the United States amid an overdose crisis. Synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, claim more American lives annually than the total number of deaths in the Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan wars combined. Merrick Garland, the U.S. Attorney General, stated, 'Our message to criminals on the dark web is: You may try to hide in the farthest reaches of the internet, but the Department of Justice will find you and hold you accountable for your crimes.' According to Garland, the number of arrests and seized funds led by the U.S. Department of Justice is the highest among international drug trafficking operations conducted by this department to date. He mentioned that one of the suspects in California led an organization that purchased fentanyl in bulk, mixed it with methamphetamine, and sold it in pill form to thousands on the dark web. Paul Abbate, the Deputy Director of the FBI, said that investigators also received leads from local police regarding overdose deaths. One overdose victim was a 19-year-old teenager in Colorado who had a keen interest in learning languages and building computers. Abbate noted, 'However, some packages that his family thought were filled with computer parts actually contained drugs he had purchased from the dark web. Because of these drugs, a young man who could have had a bright future tragically died last year from an overdose.' According to Europol, the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation, which coordinated the international operation, the United States had the highest number of arrests with 153, followed by the UK and Germany with 55 and 52 arrests, respectively.
