Global Pressure for the Release of Italian Journalist Detained in Iran

International organizations supporting press freedom have called for the immediate release of "Cecilia Sala," a 29-year-old Italian journalist who has been detained in Tehran since December 19 and transferred to Evin Prison. The Italian Prime Minister's Office announced that it is closely monitoring the case following the news of Cecilia Sala's detention by Iranian authorities and is considering all possible avenues for dialogue and her release. The Iranian government has stated that Sala's detention is due to a "violation of the laws of the Islamic Republic," but some experts link the detention of this Italian journalist in Tehran to the arrest of "Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi" in Milan. "Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi," identified as a businessman, was arrested at the request of the United States on charges of violating U.S. sanctions and supporting a foreign terrorist organization. The U.S. Department of Justice has stated that his actions led to the deaths of three American soldiers in a drone attack in Jordan. Reports suggest a connection between the detention of the Italian journalist in Iran and the arrest of Abedini in Italy.
