Global Reactions to the Arrest of Seven Senior FIFA Officials

The arrest of seven senior officials from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) on charges of financial corruption has sparked widespread reactions, with the federation's president stating his determination to cleanse football of any corruption and wrongdoing. FIFA also suspended the activities of 11 of its members, including two former vice presidents. According to Reuters, Sepp Blatter stated in a release on FIFA's official website, "Let me be clear. Such abuses have no place in football, and we will ensure that those involved in such actions are excluded from this game." Mr. Blatter, who has once again announced his candidacy for the FIFA presidency, also mentioned that the judicial investigations align with the actions FIFA has taken regarding corruption and strengthen them. The arrest of the seven FIFA officials has received extensive coverage worldwide. These arrests occurred on Wednesday morning in Zurich, the city where FIFA is headquartered, following the U.S. Department of Justice's indictment against five sports media outlets and nine FIFA officials, seven of whom were among those arrested. U.S. officials have accused these media outlets and individuals of financial corruption and accepting bribes totaling $150 million. Following this event, FIFA's ethics committee suspended 11 of its members from any football-related activities. Among the 11 are Jeffrey Webb from the Cayman Islands and Eugenio Figueredo from Uruguay, both of whom were among those arrested in Zurich and previously served as FIFA vice presidents. Meanwhile, Swiss judicial authorities announced that they have opened a case regarding the selection process for the next two World Cup hosts in 2018 and 2022, namely Russia and Qatar. However, Moscow has expressed skepticism regarding the U.S. Justice Department's intentions in issuing the indictment against the FIFA suspects. According to Interfax, Alexander Lukashevich, a spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that many questions have arisen for Moscow concerning these arrests, which were made at the request of the U.S. He added, "A group of individuals, who are representatives from various countries, are facing various financial accusations, totaling around 50 charges." This Russian official then called for the details of these accusations to be clarified, emphasizing that otherwise, Russia views this case as outside the jurisdiction of U.S. laws and borders. Previously, the British newspaper Sunday Times had reported that Qatari officials were accused of bribing FIFA to select Qatar as the host for the 2022 World Cup, which Qatari officials denied. Simultaneously, accusations have been made regarding bribery for selecting South Africa as the host for the 2010 World Cup, which South Africa has denied, calling it "baseless." According to Reuters, a spokesman for the South African Football Association expressed disappointment over these claims, stating, "We are disheartened by these allegations... They are baseless and unbelievable, and we urge anyone who has evidence to the contrary to present it." He then mentioned that the committee that worked to select South Africa as the World Cup host included Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, former presidents of South Africa, and many ministers from the country, all of whom are known for their integrity. Meanwhile, Loretta Lynch, the U.S. Attorney General, announced at a news conference on Wednesday that Jack Warner, a former FIFA vice president, had requested a $10 million bribe from the South African government for selecting the country as the World Cup host. Mr. Warner, however, has declared his innocence in a statement.
