Golden Globe Awards Ceremony - January 26, 2004

The Golden Globe Awards ceremony, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, took place in Los Angeles on Sunday night. The fantasy film "Lord Of The Rings: The Return of the King" and the comedy "Lost In Translation" were the major winners of the event. The fantasy film "The Return of the King," the third and final installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Film, as well as awards for its score and one of its songs. Director Peter Jackson expressed gratitude while receiving the Golden Globe for Best Drama Film, honoring the late J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the classic Lord of the Rings books. He said, "I really just want to accept this award and honor Professor Tolkien for his incredible book." The comedy "Lost In Translation," about two travelers who become friends in Tokyo, won three Golden Globe awards and was named Best Comedy Film of the year, with Sofia Coppola, its writer and director, receiving an award, and Bill Murray, the film's star, recognized as Best Actor in a Comedy. American actress Diane Keaton, 57, also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in "Something's Gotta Give." Diane Keaton thanked the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, stating, "This kind of honor not only makes her happy at this time in her life but also shines a light on the brilliance of the other artists in the film - Frances McDormand, Keanu Reeves, Amanda Peet, and others." Additionally, Charlize Theron won the honor of Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in the film "Monster." Clint Eastwood, a giant in the film world and the creator of the new drama "Mystic River," accepted the award on behalf of Sean Penn, the absent star of his film. The film "Osama" from Afghanistan, directed by Siddiq Barmak, also won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film.
