Google Translator to Offer More Languages and Smoother Translations

Google has successfully designed an algorithm that allows its translator - Google Translate - to translate various languages without separate training. According to the Daily Mail, this technology, known as zero-shot, is a self-learning translation method where 'Google's brain' uses artificial intelligence to translate languages it does not recognize. 'Google's brain' is a machine learning project across various Google products. In this technology, if Google learns the translation of an English word to Spanish and the translation of the same word to German, it will automatically be able to tell you the German translation of that English word. Google explained in a post on its research blog that this achievement was made possible by a new system called 'Google's Neural Machine Translation System.' The blog post states that this new technology has significantly improved the quality of Google’s translations. However, since improving translation quality for all 103 languages supported by Google Translate was a major challenge, they experimented with another method: 'We allowed this system to translate between different languages.' Google Translate, which started its work ten years ago with translations between a few limited languages, now translates 140 billion words daily. According to Wired, since translating this many words between over a hundred languages required extensive costs and planning, Google researchers and programmers thought of creating a new technology for their translation program; 'Alongside improving translation quality, our method, Zero-Shot, will be able to translate between languages that we did not train the system on.' The report continues that this process has led to the launch of Google’s multilingual translation system, which currently supports ten languages, improving quality and simplifying the translation structure. This means that users of this new service will see smoother and more natural translations of words and sentences.
