Consider a teddy bear equipped with microphones in its ears, cameras for eyes, and a motor in its neck. This toy also connects to the internet and pays attention to the movements and conversations of people in the room! If this idea reminds you of sci-fi horror movies, we must say that Google has designed and registered such a toy. Although a Google spokesperson stated they cannot confirm whether the company intends to develop and sell this toy, it has already raised concerns among privacy advocates, being described as 'one of Google's scariest designs' to date. Google claims, 'We register various designs with different ideas from our employees. Some of these ideas later become a product or type of service, and some do not. Registering a design does not necessarily mean it will be produced.' But what makes this toy truly frightening? Google states that this toy acts like a remote control. It connects to Wi-Fi, the internet, and Bluetooth, and for example, if you tell it to change the TV channel, it does so. Or if you ask it to take a picture of the food, it complies. However, this device also pays attention to the conversations and behaviors of family members. For a company like Google, whose main source of revenue comes from advertising, this means entering people's homes and collecting data on their desires. Imagine you mention traveling to a city while this toy is in the room. Then, when you check your email or open another page on the internet, you will likely see advertisements for hotels in that city. This was just a simple example of what today's smart devices are capable of. Last year, Google acquired Nest, a company that makes a smart thermostat for controlling home temperatures. At that time, the news of this acquisition raised many questions about why a company like Google should venture into the energy and thermostat industry. However, Nest is not just a thermostat. You can control it from anywhere. With an app connected to your smartphone, you can turn the heater on or off, and this device sends the temperature information to your phone or tablet. This new toy could be a new tool for collecting and controlling information inside homes. Information that is supposed to be accessible only to the owner but is practically connected to a server of a company like Google. Now we must wait and see whether Google will mass-produce this design and in what form and design it will be offered to customers.
