Greek Company to Pay $2.4 Million Fine for Smuggling Iranian Oil

Court documents in the U.S. reveal that a Greek shipping company has admitted to smuggling crude oil under Iranian sanctions and has agreed to pay a $2.4 million fine. The Associated Press reports that these documents were seen on Thursday. The case against Empire Navigation, which has now become public, shows that the company faces three years of supervision as part of an agreement with prosecutors, marking the first public announcement by U.S. prosecutors that the U.S. has seized about 1 million barrels of oil from the tanker 'Suez Rajan.' It was previously reported that this cargo belonged to sanctioned Iranian oil. The seizure of this oil cargo has heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. The increase in tensions comes even as the two countries are trying to negotiate the exchange of billions of dollars of Iran's frozen assets in South Korea in return for the release of five Iranian-American citizens in Tehran. The court case also sheds light on part of the covert operations for smuggling Iranian crude oil in the face of Western sanctions since the collapse of the JCPOA, operations that have expanded in scope throughout this year. A senior commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) emphasized in August this year regarding the potential unloading of the seized Iranian tanker that 'if the enemies foolishly unload it, we will retaliate.' The commander of the IRGC Navy also stated on July 19 that 'if a company attempts to unload our oil from the seized tanker, we hold that company responsible.' The U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, stated in September this year that the deployment of U.S. forces in the Persian Gulf region is a suitable response to the 'threatening actions of the Islamic Republic' and asserted that there is no reason to withdraw its forces from the region until it sees a 'reduction in the level of threat.' The U.S. and its allies have been seizing Iranian oil shipments since 2019. This has led to a series of attacks in the Middle East that have been attributed to the response of the Islamic Republic. The Iranian military and the IRGC have also seized several vessels in the waters of the Middle East, including the Persian Gulf. U.S. lawmakers have called for resolving the issue of unloading the seized Iranian tanker cargo.
