Greta Thunberg, Environmental Activist, Arrested in The Hague

Greta Thunberg, the renowned Swedish environmental activist, was arrested twice by police during protests in The Hague, Netherlands, on Saturday, April 6. Initially, she was briefly detained along with other protesters who aimed to block a major highway in the city. After her release, she quickly joined a small group of protesters who had blocked another road leading to the train station, where she was arrested again and taken away by police. Before her arrest, Ms. Thunberg told reporters that her reason for protesting was that the world is facing an existential crisis. According to her, 'We are in a planetary emergency and we will not stand by while people lose their lives and livelihoods, and while we can do something, they become environmental refugees.' Environmental activists, who are calling for an end to subsidies for fossil fuel use, have blocked the A12 highway in The Hague several times in recent months. In previous demonstrations, the police had taken detainees to another part of The Hague and released them there. The local police, while refusing to comment on individual cases, stated that anyone who attempted to block roads was arrested.
