Grossi in Iran; Tangible Actions for Confidence-Building Requested by the IAEA

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who has traveled to Tehran, met on Monday evening with several officials of the Islamic Republic, including Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and Ali Bagheri, and called for transparency from the Iranian government regarding its nuclear program. Rafael Grossi posted images from his meetings on social media platform 'X', stating: 'I proposed a set of tangible practical actions regarding the nuclear activities of the Islamic Republic and asked Iranian officials to revive the confidence-building process and accelerate transparency.' Iranian media reported that during the meeting with the IAEA Director General, the chief negotiator of the Islamic Republic in nuclear talks, Ali Bagheri, stated that the nuclear activities of the Islamic Republic have always been within the framework of international commitments, including the Non-Proliferation Treaty. This claim comes as the IAEA reported in a confidential report to its 35 member countries in March 2023 that Iran's stockpile of 60% enriched uranium has 'slightly' decreased in the last three months, but the total stockpile of enriched uranium in the country continues to increase. The report also indicated that the Iranian government possesses enough enriched uranium that, if further enriched, could produce a nuclear bomb. The Islamic Republic continues to deny efforts to acquire nuclear weapons, asserting that its high-level enrichment is for 'non-military purposes.' Western countries believe there is no 'credible non-military justification' for enrichment to such high levels. According to the announced schedule, Rafael Grossi will participate on Tuesday in the first international nuclear conference in Isfahan and will meet with Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, and will answer journalists' questions at a press conference.
