Grossi: The Islamic Republic is Seeking to Increase 60% Enriched Uranium Production by 'Sevenfold'

As the Islamic Republic insists on high-level uranium enrichment, Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warned on Friday, February 15, about the sharp increase in the Islamic Republic's enriched uranium stockpile, emphasizing that the opportunity to revive the JCPOA is running out. Despite widespread opposition from the international community, Iran continues its 60% enrichment and is not far from the 90% enrichment needed to produce nuclear weapons. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Grossi warned that time is running out for the revival of the JCPOA, 'but that does not mean we cannot do it quickly.' According to him, the IAEA has 'all the necessary information,' but decision-making is up to the member states of the agency. The Director General stated that the Iranian government is in the process of increasing its monthly production of 60% enriched uranium sevenfold and is likely to increase its 60% uranium stockpile to 250 kilograms by the time of the agency's scheduled quarterly report next month. According to the agency's criteria, this amount of uranium, if enriched further, would be sufficient to produce six nuclear bombs. Rafael Grossi warned that the international community must take this issue 'very seriously,' and 'that is why I believe we should not waste any more time.' He expressed hope that the Islamic Republic of Iran would once again be in the spotlight. The Director General said he is eagerly awaiting the appointment of a special envoy from the United States on Iran by the White House to begin consultations and exchanges of views with him regarding the next steps towards the Islamic Republic. Grossi also added that the agency is in contact with the Trump administration.
