Growing Concerns in Europe; Belarus Claims Deployment of Russian Nuclear Weapons Completed

The President of Belarus announced on Monday that Russia has completed the deployment of its tactical nuclear weapon shipments in Belarus, a move that has raised significant concerns among neighboring countries and Eastern Europe. According to the Associated Press, Alexander Lukashenko stated at an economic bloc meeting led by Moscow in St. Petersburg that the deployment of these weapons was completed in October, but he did not provide details about the number or location of the weapons. Tactical nuclear weapons, designed for battlefield use, have a shorter range and less destructive power compared to much stronger nuclear warheads mounted on long-range missiles. Lukashenko also claimed that hosting Russian nuclear weapons in his country is aimed at preventing aggression from Poland. Russia has stated it will maintain control over the nuclear weapons sent to Belarus. Poland has previously supported Kyiv with military, humanitarian, and political assistance in response to Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and participates in international sanctions against Russia and Belarus. On December 5, the U.S. sanctioned 11 individuals and seven entities that generate revenue for Lukashenko's regime in Belarus, are active in the country's defense sector, and facilitate Russia's war against Ukraine. The U.S. State Department stated that the goal of these sanctions is to increase costs for Lukashenko's regime due to its brutal crackdown on the pro-democracy movement in Belarus, financial corruption within Lukashenko's family, and participation in Russia's 'unjustifiable' war against Ukraine. Research from Yale University indicates that since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, over 2,400 Ukrainian children have been forcibly transferred to Belarus. The exiled leader of the Belarusian opposition stated that abandoning Ukraine threatens the security of Eastern Europe. Athletes from Russia and Belarus will participate as neutrals in the Paris Paralympics. Lukashenko stated that Belarus would use Russian nuclear weapons in the event of 'foreign aggression.' Vladimir Putin warned that any aggression from Poland towards Belarus would be considered an attack on Russia.
