Guterres Calls for Unlimited Access for Gaza Civilians to Humanitarian Aid

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Saturday, April 4, during a visit to the Rafah crossing, stated that it is time for Israel to demonstrate its 'ironclad commitment' to unlimited access for Gaza civilians to humanitarian aid. Mr. Guterres criticized the blockage of aid trucks at the Egypt border for entering the Gaza Strip, where people are facing hunger, and added that the UN will continue its cooperation with Egypt to ensure 'uninterrupted' aid delivery to Gaza. He also called for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza and reiterated his request for a humanitarian ceasefire in the region. Following the terrorist attack on October 7 by Hamas militants against Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of over 250 others, Israel launched an offensive against Gaza aimed at destroying this group supported by the Islamic Republic. Currently, about 130 individuals are still held by Hamas, although it is reported that some may have been killed by now. The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Israel, Japan, and several other countries have classified Hamas as a terrorist organization. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, after talks in Tel Aviv, warned the Israeli government about the dangers of an attack on Rafah, stating that 'such an action could isolate Israel globally and jeopardize its long-term security and standing.' According to CNN, Mr. Blinken on Friday, April 3, told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli war cabinet that the United States remains committed to the 'complete defeat of Hamas, the group that dominates the Gaza Strip, including in Rafah,' but 'extensive ground military operations in Rafah are not the solution.' Benny Gantz, Israel's Minister of Defense, in a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State, thanked the Biden administration for its support for Israel and emphasized his country's commitment to operations in Rafah aimed at eradicating Hamas. He stated that Israel will continue to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza while ensuring that this aid does not reach Hamas.
