Hackers Demand Millions from CDK Global, Chaos in the U.S. Auto Market

Hackers have demanded millions of dollars in ransom following a cyberattack on CDK Global, the primary provider of dealership management software in the United States. This attack has caused widespread disruption to the operations of approximately 15,000 car dealerships across the country, posing a significant challenge to the trillion-dollar automotive industry. CDK Global is currently considering the payment of a ransom amounting to several tens of millions of dollars to end the disruptions affecting thousands of car dealerships. The hacking group responsible for this attack is based in Eastern Europe. The cyberattack on CDK Global began on June 19, and the company shut down its systems to prevent further infiltration. This action led to disruptions in sales, repairs, and vehicle deliveries at dealerships, creating a serious challenge for the automotive industry in North America. CDK initially restored some of its services temporarily, but was forced to deactivate them again following a second attack. The company has warned dealerships that their systems may be inaccessible for several days. This attack comes at a time when the U.S. automotive industry, with sales exceeding $1.2 trillion last year, is considered one of the largest industries in the country. Disruptions in dealership operations, especially at the end of the sales season, will cause significant damage to this industry. CDK Global has not yet disclosed the identity of the attackers but has warned its customers about calls from unknown individuals claiming to be affiliated with the company.
