Haley: The Security Council Has Failed to Provide an Effective Response to Iran's Actions

The United States representative to the United Nations criticized Iran's violations of Security Council resolutions and called for the Islamic Republic to adhere to the nuclear agreement, stating that we want Iran to establish normal relations with the U.S. and other countries. The UN Security Council meeting held on Thursday evening in New York focused on reviewing the nuclear agreement. In this session, Nikki Haley stated that more than two years have passed since Security Council Resolution 2231, and the Security Council has still failed to provide an effective response to Iran's actions, and the council has done nothing. Ms. Haley mentioned specific violations of the Security Council resolution by Iran, noting that the resolution prohibits Qassem Soleimani from traveling outside Iran, yet he is present in Syria and Iraq. This is a violation of the Security Council resolution, but the council has not reacted. Ms. Haley referenced the story of the scorpion and the frog, stating that at the end of the story, the scorpion admitted that it is in its nature to sting. We must understand that the nature of Iran's nuclear program is also to support terrorism and create tensions in the region. Look at the evidence: missile programs, Iran's role in Yemen and Syria, or the presence of Iranian advisors in these countries. The Iranian government also exploits its own people. There are reasons behind these measures. The Security Council is not supposed to turn a blind eye to Iran's law-breaking actions and violations of the resolution.' Ms. Haley referred to Security Council Resolution 2231, which was adopted more than a year ago after the nuclear agreement. The resolution includes demands from Iran that the Islamic Republic has not yet been obligated to fulfill. Among these demands is a request for Iran to stop testing ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, yet Iran has conducted several missile tests in the past year, claiming these tests are defensive. On Thursday, Ms. Haley defended new U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran, stating: 'We will continue our actions to sanction those who violate the Security Council resolution.' She added: 'The U.S. is reviewing the JCPOA, and until this review is completed, we will adhere to it and ask Iran to adhere to it as well.' The U.S. representative at the UN stated: 'We ask Iran to establish normal relations with the U.S. and other countries.' In this session, representatives from China, Germany, Italy, and the European Union also spoke. While most praised Iran's commitment to the nuclear agreement, some, like the German representative, criticized Iran's role in destabilizing the Middle East. The EU representative also stated that one cannot ignore Tehran's destructive actions while acknowledging its positive contributions. In a text read by Antonio Guterres' deputy, he also mentioned that the JCPOA text regarding Iran's missile program is ambiguous, but Iran should currently refrain from missile provocations.
