Hamas Media: Gaza's Electricity Has Been Cut Off

Media affiliated with the militant group Hamas reported on Wednesday, October 11, that after the only power plant in the Gaza Strip ceased operations, the besieged Palestinian area has plunged into darkness. In this regard, Jalal Ismail, the head of the Gaza Electricity Department, told CNN that the Gaza power plant stopped working after running out of fuel, adding, "Gaza is currently without electricity." He noted that the people of Gaza can still use generators, but with the siege of Gaza, the fuel needed for the generators is also running out. Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing two Egyptian security sources, that Cairo has been in talks with the United States and other countries regarding the provision of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip following a limited ceasefire. These sources, who requested anonymity, told the news agency that this aid would be sent through the "Rafah" border crossing between Gaza and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. Hamas, which is supported financially and militarily by the Islamic Republic, attacked Israel on Saturday, October 7. This attack left over 1,200 dead and more than 2,200 injured. Meanwhile, Hamas militants have taken more than a hundred Israeli civilians and soldiers hostage, as well as several citizens from other countries. Jake Sullivan, the U.S. National Security Advisor, emphasized on Tuesday, October 10, in a press conference at the White House: "According to our information, at least 20 American citizens have gone missing following Hamas's attacks on Israel, but it is still unclear how many of them are being held hostage by Hamas, and the disappearance of these individuals does not necessarily mean they have been taken hostage." The U.S. Treasury Secretary commented on Hamas's attack on Israel: all options for sanctioning the Islamic Republic are on the table. The Pope called on Hamas to immediately release the hostages. The U.S. is seeking to establish a "safe corridor" from Gaza to Egypt.
