Hamas's Plot to Attack Settlers Amid Fragile Ceasefire Agreement

Israel Katz, Israel's Defense Minister, stated on Thursday, March 1, that Hamas is plotting terrorist attacks against settlers in the West Bank and Israeli soldiers while a ceasefire is currently in effect. Katz noted the increase in military operations aimed at 'destroying Iranian-backed terrorist networks in Judea and Samaria (West Bank).' He reminded that Iran has been seeking to establish an eastern front against Jewish settlers by providing weapons, funding, and instructions for the establishment of terrorist squads over the past two years. Katz added that Israeli forces will remain in refugee camps, particularly in Jenin and Tulkarm. According to the Defense Minister, the refugee camp in Jenin is currently uninhabited, and he has ordered the army to remain there for at least a year. The fragile ceasefire has been further jeopardized by Hamas's plots to attack Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank, as well as the illegal and humiliating behavior of this Iranian-backed terrorist group towards hostages taken during their release. The first phase of the ceasefire, which lasts six weeks, is set to conclude in the coming days. Steve Hittkoff, the U.S. President's special envoy to the Middle East, has urged both Israel and Hamas to enter the second phase of the ceasefire. In this phase, all remaining Israeli hostages are to be released, and discussions to end the war will take place. The ceasefire negotiations, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, have halted 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas. During the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 of last year, which is backed by the Islamic Republic of Iran, 1,200 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed, and over 250 others, including the elderly, women, and children, were taken hostage to Gaza. Following this terrorist attack, Israel launched an offensive on Gaza to destroy Hamas and free the kidnapped hostages. According to Israeli estimates, at least 34 of the Hamas hostages have lost their lives. Israel has also targeted positions of the Syrian government; Katz stated, 'We do not trust Ahmad al-Shara.'
