Hanna Neumann Calls for EU Transparency Regarding the 'Concealment' of Detention of Swedish Citizen

Hanna Neumann, a German representative in the European Parliament, raised questions to Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, following the announcement of the detention of a 'Swedish citizen' with a history of working in the EU. Neumann pointed out that 'Johan Flodros' has been trapped in 'the regime of Iran' for over 500 days, referring to him as a 'bargaining chip' and stating, 'This is a cruel incident that requires immediate clarification.' In a letter co-signed with Cornelia Ernst, head of the Iran relations committee, Bart Grothuis, vice-chair of the Iran relations committee, and Dietmar Köster, a member of the Iran relations committee, Neumann described the lack of international media awareness regarding the detention of this Swedish citizen before the members of the European Parliament as 'incomprehensible and unacceptable.' This representative, opposed to the Islamic Republic, demanded accountability and transparency from the European Parliament in her letter. Among the questions raised by this German representative was how long EU officials have been aware of the Swedish citizen's detention and why this information has not been made public until now. Neumann also requested explanations from EU representatives regarding the health status of the detained individual and whether the European institution has been in contact with him during his detention, as well as what actions have been taken so far for the release of this Swedish citizen. According to Hanna Neumann, 'As long as the Revolutionary Guards terrorize their own people, we must place them on the sanctions list and not negotiate with the Islamic Republic.' The New York Times reported on Monday, September 4, that Johan Flodros, an EU employee, has been imprisoned in Iran for over 500 days. The New York Times cited informed sources stating that Mr. Flodros, 33 years old and from Sweden, traveled to Iran last spring with several compatriots for a private tourist trip. He was arrested on April 17 when he intended to leave Iran at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Airport. Johan Flodros, who is currently in Evin Prison, has held several positions in EU-related institutions. He also appeared in a promotional campaign aimed at attracting Swedish youth to jobs in the EU. The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while refraining from commenting on the details of the incident, stated in an email correspondence to the New York Times: 'A Swedish citizen in his thirties was detained in Iran in April 2022. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Embassy in Tehran are working intensively on this case.' The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs added: 'We understand the interest in this matter, but according to our assessment, if the ministry speaks publicly about its actions, it complicates the handling of this case.' Flodros has been an assistant to Ilva Johansson, the European Commissioner for Migration, since 2019. He also joined the European External Action Service in 2021. This institution, which combines the foreign and defense ministries of the EU, is currently under the supervision of Josep Borrell. Informed sources told the New York Times that this Swedish citizen had previously visited Iran without any issues as part of an EU development program. Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, confirmed on Tuesday, September 5, that the detained Swedish citizen had previously worked for the EU. Borrell stated to reporters that the EU will 'intensely' work for the release of this Swedish citizen.
