Hanna Neumann: German Prosecutor's Investigation Could Lead to Designating IRGC as a Terrorist Organization

Hanna Neumann, a German representative in the European Parliament, announced in a tweet that the investigation by the German federal prosecutor could pave the way for necessary legal action to list the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization in the European Union. According to Neumann, the German federal prosecutor has begun investigations into attacks on Jewish institutions that are said to be linked to the 'Operational Command' of Iran associated with the IRGC. Neumann wrote that these investigations could lay the groundwork for the necessary legal action to include the IRGC in the list of terrorist organizations. Iranians residing in Germany and other parts of the world have repeatedly called on the European Union to designate the IRGC as a terrorist group following widespread protests. Last month, a group of constitutionalist women held a 20-day sit-in in front of the German Chancellor's office to advocate for the IRGC's designation as a terrorist organization. In May, thousands of Iranians opposed to the Islamic Republic participated in a large protest march in London, urging the UK to take action to add the IRGC to the list of terrorist organizations. Additionally, two senior U.S. officials announced in a press conference that less than a year after President Joe Biden's executive order to intensify efforts to bring back hostages and American citizens wrongfully imprisoned in other countries, the United States had placed the IRGC's intelligence organization and four of its senior commanders on the sanctions list due to their role in detaining American citizens. Although members of the European Parliament voted positively last year to include the IRGC in the list of terrorist groups, the Council of Europe and EU member states have yet to officially list this military entity as a terrorist organization.
