Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood Producer, Denies 'Rape and Sexual Assault' Charges

Harvey Weinstein's lawyer stated that he did not accept the charges of 'rape and sexual assault' during the first court session held on Tuesday, June 4. Weinstein, a co-founder of the Miramax film company, has been accused of 'sexual misconduct' by over 70 women, some of which date back decades. The allegations against Weinstein were a major factor in the emergence of the hashtag '#MeToo', where hundreds of women accused powerful men in politics, business, and entertainment of inappropriate behavior and sexual assault. The 66-year-old Weinstein left the Manhattan Supreme Court building in New York without speaking to reporters. His defense attorney and a spokesperson for the prosecutor confirmed that Weinstein did not accept the charges. Weinstein surrendered to the police on May 25 and was brought to the first court session in handcuffs. The judge temporarily released him on a one million dollar bail, on the condition that he surrender his passport and wear a tracking bracelet. He was ordered not to leave the states of New York and Connecticut. The New York prosecutor's office did not disclose the names of the two women who accused Weinstein of sexual assault. However, details of one case resemble the complaint of Lucia Evans, a woman who aspired to be a singer, who told The New Yorker that Weinstein forced her to perform oral sex in 2004. The New Yorker and The New York Times first published allegations against Weinstein last year. If convicted, Weinstein could face a prison sentence of five to 25 years. The indictment against this Hollywood producer is the second case of trials of previously influential individuals. Bill Cosby, a famous American comedian, was also convicted in April this year for drugging and sexually assaulting a woman who was an old friend of his. This is just one of dozens of women who have accused Cosby of inappropriate behavior and sexual assault. Among the Hollywood actresses who have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct are Salma Hayek and Uma Thurman. Members of the board of the company in which Weinstein was a major shareholder fired him in March, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also ended his membership in the Academy. In the years prior to this scandal, films produced by Weinstein had received numerous Academy Awards. The London police and the Los Angeles prosecutor's office have also announced that they are reviewing other allegations made against Weinstein.
