Hassan Nasrallah's Reaction to Trump's Decision on the Golan Heights

The Secretary-General of Hezbollah Lebanon reacted to the visit of the U.S. Secretary of State to Beirut, calling Donald Trump's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights an "insult to the Islamic and Arab world." Hassan Nasrallah stated on Tuesday, April 6, in a speech that even America's friendly countries in the region agree on Syria's ownership of this area. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, recognized Israel's sovereignty over the strategic Golan Heights on Monday, contrary to decades of U.S. policy. The Golan Heights is part of Syrian territory that was captured by Israel during the Six-Day War, but Israel's sovereignty over the area has never been recognized by the international community. This action has led to protests not only from Syria and Lebanon but also from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain. The Secretary-General of Hezbollah stated that the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has paved the way for this issue. He also predicted that Trump would recognize Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank as well. Israel occupied Palestinian territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip during the 1967 war, but despite withdrawing from Gaza in 2005, it continues to besiege the area while maintaining control over large parts of the West Bank and continuing construction in Jewish settlements in these areas. The Secretary-General of Hezbollah also praised Iran and Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Revolutionary Guards, stating that Hezbollah has fought Israel with Iranian weapons. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, after his visit to Beirut, stated that all Lebanese officials he met with agreed on "the importance of maintaining their political power away from the meddling hands of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
