Head of Germany's Domestic Intelligence Agency Dismissed

According to Reuters, Hans-Georg Maassen will be transferred to a senior position in the Ministry of the Interior. He has held this position since 2012. The report states that Hans-Georg Maassen had questioned the authenticity of video footage regarding the pursuit and harassment of migrants by far-right extremists in the city of Chemnitz in eastern Germany, which intensified disputes within the German coalition government. The Social Democratic Party, one of the parties in Angela Merkel's coalition government, had called for Hans-Georg Maassen's dismissal, while the Christian Social Union party supported him. Protests by far-right groups against immigration policies in Germany have continued. Reuters reports that Hans-Georg Maassen's transfer to the Ministry of the Interior has led to a certain level of satisfaction among the three main parties in the coalition government, despite their disagreements on this issue. Meanwhile, opposition groups have strongly criticized Hans-Georg Maassen's transfer to the Ministry of the Interior, claiming that this decision is a way to maintain appearances and promote him. Leftist representatives in the German parliament argue that the failure to dismiss Hans-Georg Maassen by Horst Seehofer, the Minister of the Interior, has called the government's credibility into question. Horst Seehofer, the leader of the right-wing Bavarian party (CSU), has supported Hans-Georg Maassen's approach regarding far-right extremists. A wave of protests by far-right extremists began following the death of a 22-year-old German man in Cottbus. Police state that this young man, who had heart problems, attempted to intervene during a conflict involving a group of Afghan migrants. During the incident, he was punched in the face and died from cardiac arrest. Two Afghan youths, aged 18 and 20, have also been arrested.
