Heavy snowfall and freezing conditions have swept across the United States over the past two weeks, resulting in the deaths of at least 55 individuals. Both severe cold and road accidents have contributed to these fatalities, with 17 lives lost in Tennessee alone. According to the Associated Press, snowfall on Friday in the eastern U.S., including New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C., exceeded expectations. In the Midwest, the city of Michigan in Indiana saw 43 centimeters of snow on Friday alone, adding to the snow from previous days. The heavy snow and freezing conditions from east to west across the U.S. have caused widespread power outages, making it more difficult to address the weather-related issues. In the western U.S., particularly in Oregon, thousands have been without power for over two weeks, prompting the state's governor to declare a state of emergency. Reuters has reported similarly that power has been cut to over 100,000 customers in Oregon. The Portland Electric Company, the largest utility in the state, is facing numerous challenges in restoring power due to ongoing freezing conditions and storms. More than 100 million people, nearly 30% of the U.S. population, are in areas affected by severe weather conditions.
