Hengaw: A Young Kurdish Man Killed Due to Torture by Security Forces

Pouya Babaei, a 26-year-old young merchant from Javanrud, died on Friday, September 8, due to "brain injury and spinal fractures" caused by beatings from the security and law enforcement agents of the Islamic Republic. According to the Hengaw Human Rights Organization, the police shot at Pouya Babaei's vehicle near the city of "Hamil" in Kermanshah province and violently arrested him. Hengaw reported, citing an "informed source," that the police shot at this young merchant's vehicle while he was traveling without cargo to load goods in southern Iran. The report indicates that after shooting at the front wheels of Pouya Babaei's vehicle, he was arrested and severely beaten at the scene, resulting in a brain injury and spinal fractures. The police have not responded to this incident. Hengaw reported that the young man's wife, who had married him a month ago, suffered a nervous breakdown due to the severity of her grief and is currently receiving treatment in the hospital. According to this report, the intelligence office in Javanrud has pressured Mr. Babaei's family to refrain from holding a memorial service and publicizing this matter. In recent years, merchants, especially Kolbars in the Kurdish regions of Iran, have repeatedly been targeted by direct gunfire from the security and law enforcement agents of the Islamic Republic, resulting in dozens of Kurdish merchants and Kolbars being killed and hundreds more injured.
