Hezbollah Launches 'Heavy Drone Attack' in Northern Israel

Israeli media reported on a 'night of heavy drone attacks by Hezbollah' on northern Israel from Saturday night to early Sunday. Reports indicate that a rehabilitation center for injured Israeli forces in northern Israel and other areas in Galilee and Golan were set ablaze, with firefighters working since Saturday to extinguish fires in five sections. According to Yedioth Ahronoth, a missile strike that occurred on Sunday morning, August 21, from southern Lebanon towards western Galilee also caused another fire. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for sending drones to Israel on Saturday, asserting that they were directed towards the Alon military base. The escalation of the crisis at Israel's northern border followed the Israeli army's announcement of killing a senior militant of the extremist Hamas group in Sidon during a Friday operation. Israeli Channel 12 reported on Saturday that senior army commanders urged the political echelon to allow the military to escalate its response to Hezbollah from limited actions to strong and extensive operations, even at the cost of intensifying the crisis. According to the report, commanders informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government that the army is on high alert and that the political leadership must permit decisive actions. Channel 12 stated that the army would implement a series of extensive measures it has prepared if it receives a 'green light' from the government. Concurrently, Israel's efforts to strengthen regional and international coalitions as a preparation for any military developments from Iran continue. The American site Axios reported on Saturday that the U.S. is preparing for a critical week, as efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza war have reached a point that can be described as 'now or never.' The U.S. hopes that a ceasefire in the Gaza war will alleviate or at least limit the crisis between Israel and Hezbollah and between Israel and Iran. Axios wrote that the outcomes of the upcoming efforts will reveal whether the region is heading towards a deeper crisis and broader war or whether, for the first time since the extremist Hamas group's attack on Israel on October 7 last year, regional developments will face a significant change. Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the European Union and has been under military strikes from the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip for 310 days. William Burns, the head of the CIA, will arrive in the region this week to lead the American team in ceasefire negotiations.
