Hezbollah Lebanon Claims Responsibility for Attack on Israeli Military Convoy

On Wednesday, February 8, an Israeli military vehicle was targeted by an anti-tank missile at the border with Lebanon. According to the Associated Press, the Israeli army reported in a statement that two Israeli soldiers were killed and seven others wounded as a result of the attack. Lebanese security officials stated that immediately after the military vehicle was hit, the Israeli army fired 'at least 50 artillery shells' into Lebanese territory. Hezbollah Lebanon claimed responsibility for the missile attack on the Israeli military convoy in a statement released on Wednesday. In this statement, Hezbollah stated that its forces 'destroyed several Israeli military vehicles transporting Israeli officers and soldiers, inflicting casualties on the enemy.' This attack was carried out by a group called 'Martyrs of Quneitra.' Quneitra is the name of the area where Mohammad Ali Allahdadi, a general of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and several members of Hezbollah were recently killed in an Israeli airstrike. The Fars news agency, close to the IRGC, referred to the events of Wednesday as a 'precise ambush by Hezbollah for the Zionist army' and reported that the number of Israeli soldiers killed in this attack was 'at least 15.' According to the Associated Press, a spokesperson for the United Nations also announced that on Wednesday, a Spanish member of the UN forces in southern Lebanon was killed, and his death is likely related to the clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in the area. Meanwhile, the head of the UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon has called on all parties involved to show 'maximum restraint' and to prevent the escalation of conflicts. According to the Associated Press, these clashes, which occurred in the Shebaa Farms area, come in the wake of an Israeli helicopter attack on an area in the Golan Heights that resulted in the death of an IRGC general and several members of Hezbollah, including Jihad Mughniyeh, the son of a former Hezbollah commander. Iran and Hezbollah had threatened to respond harshly to Israel. Lebanese officials told the news agency that following the targeting of the Israeli military vehicle, which was on patrol, Israeli forces shelled several villages in the border area. No Israeli or Lebanese sources have yet reported the casualty figures from these incidents. Lebanon claims that the Shebaa Farms area, which has been under Israeli control since 1967, should be returned to Lebanon. Meanwhile, Syria also claims territorial rights to this area, and the United Nations believes that the issue of ownership of the Shebaa Farms should be resolved through negotiations between Syria and Israel. The French news agency also reported that following the attack on the Israeli military vehicle, access roads to the area were blocked by police. The Israeli army has recently gone on high alert at the border with Lebanon and Syria and has increased the number of soldiers and tanks stationed in these areas. Following the airstrike on Hezbollah forces in the Golan Heights, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon warned that 'governments, regimes, and organizations across the border' will be responsible for any potential attack on Israel, and Israel knows how to impose a heavy price on those who harm it. Meanwhile, Israeli media reported on February 5 that the country had sent a 'message' to Iran through Russia, urging it not to seek revenge and calling for 'calm' in this regard. Israel and Hezbollah entered a 33-day war in 2006 that resulted in hundreds of deaths. This war ended with UN Security Council Resolution 1701, and no border changes occurred.
