Hollande: I Don't Think Trump Will Cancel the Nuclear Deal with Iran

François Hollande, the President of France, said on Tuesday that he does not believe Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, will tear up the nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, known as the JCPOA. According to Reuters, Hollande stated in an interview with France 24 television: 'This agreement (JCPOA) brings us all kinds of security. Can the U.S. under Trump's leadership question this agreement? I don't think so.' The French President added: 'There are fundamental realities, and this pact guarantees us. The absence of any agreement would be a very serious issue.' During his election campaign, Donald Trump referred to the nuclear deal with Iran as one of the 'worst agreements.' According to CNN, Trump stated in March at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) meeting that his top priority was 'to eliminate this harmful agreement with Iran.' The nuclear agreement between Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., China, Russia, France, and the UK, along with Germany, was signed on July 14 last year in Vienna, and under it, severe restrictions on Tehran's nuclear program would lead to a reduction or lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran. Meanwhile, Barack Obama, the President of the United States, said on Monday in his first press conference after the U.S. presidential election that Donald Trump would not easily be able to dismantle the agreement with Iran. According to CNN, Obama stated: 'When Iran has adhered to its commitments over the past year, dismantling this agreement will be difficult.' He added that Trump must also consider the impact of U.S. allies on this issue. In this context, European foreign ministers emphasized their commitment to the nuclear agreement with Iran during their meeting on Monday, which involved the three main countries of the European Union; the UK, France, and Germany, along with the United States, Russia, and China.
