Hollande's Warning to Trump on Climate Change: U.S. Commitments Are Irreversible

François Hollande, the President of France, warned the U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Saturday, November 20, that the United States' commitments to reduce global warming and climate change are "irreversible." Just one day after the conclusion of the international climate change conference in Marrakech, Hollande cautioned Trump that he has no choice but to respect the U.S. commitments to climate change that were endorsed by the current President, Barack Obama. The United States was one of the key countries in achieving the Paris Climate Agreement, and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry referred to it as a victory for the entire planet and all generations at the time of the agreement's signing last December. The Paris Agreement came into force nearly two weeks ago on November 5, and weeks prior to its implementation, Barack Obama emphasized that this agreement represents "a historic day in the battle to preserve the planet for future generations." However, Donald Trump, during his election campaign, labeled climate change as a "hoax" and promised to withdraw from the Paris Agreement if elected. This stance has faced criticism from the United Nations. Hollande stated that "the Paris Agreement is irreversible, and no one can shirk their responsibility." He warned that even if Trump is tempted to withdraw from the agreement, "there are forces, including in American democracy, that ensure this agreement is respected." Greenhouse gases are the main drivers of climate change, and under the Paris Agreement, countries around the world are obligated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fossil fuel use. Additionally, through the measures outlined in this global agreement, the increase in global temperature must remain below two degrees Celsius by 2100, a goal that is not easy to achieve and practically requires fundamental changes in energy consumption worldwide.
