Hookstein in Beirut: There is a Real Opportunity to End the War

Amos Hochstein, senior Middle East advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden, announced the existence of a 'real opportunity' to end the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. This senior U.S. official, who traveled to Lebanon, stated in a press conference on Tuesday, November 29, after meeting with Nabih Berri, the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, that the reason for his return to Lebanon is 'the existence of a real opportunity to end this conflict.' The Lebanese government and Hezbollah, the group supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, agreed to the U.S. peace proposal on Monday, November 28. Hochstein emphasized that 'the moment for decision-making has arrived' and that the reason for his presence in Beirut is to 'facilitate decision-making.' He added that 'the decision to end this conflict' must ultimately be made by the parties involved. This senior U.S. official expressed hope for a decisive decision, referring to the current 'open window' available. Hezbollah media announced shortly after Hochstein's statements that Naeem Qassem, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, would speak today, November 29. Hezbollah began its unilateral rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel a day after Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. In response, Israel conducted severe attacks against this group's positions in Lebanon and Syria, killing hundreds of members of this major proxy arm of the Iranian government in the region, including its leader and senior military commanders such as Hassan Nasrallah, Foad Shakir, Ibrahim Aqil, and Hashem Safi al-Din. Simultaneously with heavy airstrikes on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, Israel has deployed its ground forces to parts of southern Lebanon, resulting in over 1.2 million Lebanese being displaced due to these conflicts. Several countries, including the U.S., Israel, Germany, Serbia, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, and Australia, have recognized Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. Media reported on the U.S. envoy's trip to Beirut to advance a ceasefire. Netanyahu stated that an agreement with Hezbollah is conditional on border security and addressing threats from Lebanon.
