Hostage Situation in Southern France Leaves Three Dead

French police announced on Friday, March 23, that three people were killed during a hostage situation at a supermarket in the town of Trebes, located in southern France. The perpetrator of the hostage-taking was also shot dead by security forces. This armed individual, reportedly a member of the Islamic State (ISIS), demanded the release of Salah Abdeslam during the hostage crisis. Salah Abdeslam is the only surviving suspect from the November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks that left 130 dead and hundreds injured. Abdeslam is of Moroccan descent and holds French nationality, having grown up in Belgium. He was hiding at the time of his arrest in the Molenbeek neighborhood of Brussels, which is known as a hub for radical Islamists in Europe. The November 2015 attacks were the largest terrorist operation in French history, for which ISIS claimed responsibility. The hostage-taker had fired at police before beginning the hostage situation in the supermarket. Reports indicate that the hostage-taker shot at police officers near the town of Carcassonne six times early Friday, injuring one of them. He then proceeded to the 'Super U' supermarket in a small town near Trebes, where he shot and killed three people. Trebes is located 100 kilometers south of Toulouse. Special police units arrived in the area and blocked access to the hostage situation site. French media report that the assailant claimed to have links to ISIS, but this information has not yet been confirmed by official authorities. France has remained on high alert since the multiple attacks in 2015 and 2016 by radical Islamists that killed over 200 citizens.
