Hostage Situation in Southwestern Germany Ends with Attacker's Death

German officials reported that on Thursday evening, a man with a covered face entered a cinema hall in the city of Weinheim, located in southwestern Germany near Mannheim, armed with a weapon and took several hostages. According to the Associated Press, no one was harmed during the hostage situation, but security officials immediately shot and killed the masked man upon entering the cinema. A police spokesperson stated that as soon as the incident occurred, security forces entered the hall and, considering the situation was threatening, shot the man dead. There has been no report on the exact number of hostages, the identity, or the motives of the man. The police indicated that the entire incident lasted about three hours. Another police officer told the Associated Press that there is no indication that this hostage situation was terrorist-related or linked to radical Islamic groups. The interior minister of Hesse state in Germany stated that it is unclear whether the weapon the man had was functional; however, he mentioned that four gunshots were heard. The German police are currently conducting further investigations into the case.
