HRANA: Shahram Namavar, detained Iranian-British citizen, remains in limbo

HRANA, the news agency of human rights activists in Iran, has reported on the uncertainty surrounding an Iranian-British dual citizen, Shahram Namavar, who has been held in Evin Prison for six months following his arrest. According to the report, Shahram Namavar was detained by government forces in Abadan after traveling to Iran in August of this year and was subsequently transferred to Tehran. Despite being in custody for over six months while visiting his mother, he remains in limbo in Ward 4 of Evin Prison, with no court hearing held for him to date. No information has been released regarding the charges against this Iranian-British citizen. In the spring of this year, the UK issued a warning regarding travel to Iran, stating that British and Iranian-British citizens are at serious risk of arbitrary detention, interrogation, or arrest by the Islamic Republic authorities. Some experts believe that the Islamic Republic detains foreign citizens, especially those with dual nationality, on baseless charges to use them as political bargaining chips, effectively taking them hostage. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Iranian Foreign Minister, previously claimed that narratives regarding the treatment of dual nationals are 'false propaganda aimed at inciting fear of Iran' and urged 'all Iranians' to 'continue their travels to Iran without concern.' The detention of foreign and dual nationals in Iran has a long history since the establishment of the Islamic Republic, with the government having detained, imprisoned, and even executed many individuals over the past four decades. Alireza Akbari, an Iranian-British dual citizen accused of 'corruption on earth,' 'actions against national security,' and 'espionage for the British intelligence service,' was executed according to the judiciary's announcement on January 13, 2023.
